A Hidden Gem in the Tweed Caldera: Our Stay at Casa Caldera

Casa Caldera blends modern design with off-grid serenity, set against a breathtaking hinterland backdrop. Discover why it’s a must-stay!

The Queensland Travel Guide acknowledges the Ngandowal and Minyungbal speaking people of the Bundjalung Country, in particular the Goodjinburra, Tul-gi-gin and Moorung – Moobah clans, the Traditional Custodians of the Tweed Region.  We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging, and recognise their continued spiritual and cultural connections to Country.  Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.

Just across the border, tucked away in the lush hinterland of Tyalgum Creek, Casa Caldera is a secluded sanctuary perfect for travellers craving a peaceful escape.

Perched high in the Tweed Caldera, surrounded by rainforest and stunning mountain views, this off-grid retreat seamlessly blends nature, privacy, and understated luxury in one breathtaking setting.

Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend getaway or simply seeking solitude in a stunning natural landscape, Casa Caldera offers the perfect stay to help you truly unwind.

Casa Caldera Review

Below, we cover everything you need to know about Casa Caldera, including its location, accommodation, amenities and local attractions.

Location

Situated on Eaglehawk Close in Tyalgum Creek (2 hours south of Brisbane or 1.25 hours south of the Gold Coast), Casa Caldera offers a secluded escape amidst the lush landscapes of the Northern Rivers region.

Positioned on a sprawling 5.11-hectare property, this guesthouse provides panoramic views of the surrounding hinterland and the majestic Wollumbin (Mount Warning) in the distance.

Despite its peaceful seclusion, Casa Caldera is conveniently located just a 5-minute drive from the charming village of Tyalgum.  This quaint town is renowned for its vibrant arts scene, historic architecture, and welcoming community.

In addition to being close to the town of Tyalgum, Casa Caldera is just a 25-minute drive from Murwillumbah and 40 minutes from Tumbulgum.

Inside the Guesthouse

Casa Caldera is a beautifully appointed, self-contained one-bedroom guesthouse designed for comfort, privacy, and those jaw-dropping hinterland views.

The indoor modern space features an open-plan layout with high ceilings and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the surrounding mountain landscape.

The living area includes a wall-mounted TV, reverse-cycle air conditioning, and a cosy indoor fireplace — perfect for cooler nights. Firewood is provided for both the indoor fireplace and the outdoor fire pit, with additional supplies available upon request.

The fully equipped kitchen is just off the lounge, includes everything you need to prepare meals, from an oven and stovetop to a microwave, a full-size fridge/freezer, a kettle, a pod coffee machine, and a toaster.

Thoughtful extras, such as tea, coffee, sugar, and olive oil, are also provided to make self-catering easy.

The separate bedroom features a queen bed with blackout blinds for a restful sleep, a second TV, air conditioning, and more of those stunning views — plus direct access to the wraparound verandah.

In the wardrobe you’ll also find two fluffy robes, yours to wear throughout your stay.

The sleek ensuite bathroom is simple but functional and comes with premium toiletries.

Outside the Guesthouse

Outside, the wraparound verandah offers multiple spaces to relax, featuring a table and chairs for alfresco dining, as well as two armchairs and a coffee table — all perfectly positioned to take in the panoramic views.

While sitting out on the verandah, be sure to keep an eye out for the birds and wallabies (see the photo below) we were lucky enough to see them each morning while enjoying our breakfast outside.

A BBQ is also available for guest use.

The standout feature? The dreamy outdoor bathtub set within your own private courtyard. Whether it’s a sunny afternoon or a starry evening, it’s the ideal spot to soak and unwind with a glass of wine in hand.

There is a fire pit and additional outdoor seating by the tub, making this courtyard a private retreat within a retreat.

While Casa Caldera shares a property with the owner’s home, guest privacy is well-maintained thanks to a large wall and gated separation (see the above image) between the two dwellings.
