BEST THINGS TO DO IN KURANDA

Below we cover all the top things to do and places to visit around Kuranda.

1 Kuranda Scenic Railway

When most people think of Kuranda, they think of the world-famous Kuranda Scenic Railway. This historic railway, dating back to 1891, offers an unforgettable journey – it’s one of the best Kuranda day trips from Cairns.

This spectacular train journey chugs past the coastal plains of Cairns and winds its way up through the dense, heritage-listed rainforest, offering passengers breathtaking views of steep ravines, cascading waterfalls and the spectacular Barron Gorge.

Originally built to transport supplies to mine workers, many lives were lost during construction due to dangerous working conditions while building to a staggering elevation of 327 metres above sea level.

The train journey takes just under two hours and goes through 15 tunnels, takes 93 curves and travels across 37 bridges over deep ravines and beside tumbling waterfalls.

You’ll get spectacular views of Stoney Creek Falls and Barron Falls before arriving in Kuranda.

The comfortable, refurbished train carriages ooze historic charm with their polished wood. As you travel, a commentary is played to share details about how the railway was constructed and points out various photo opportunities.

There is one short stop along the train journey at Din Din (Barron Falls) station, so you can enjoy the stunning views and take some photos.

This is a must-do activity if you’re looking for what to do. Kuranda Scenic Railway will definitely be the highlight of your visit.
