About Fox & Hounds
From the moment you step into the Fox & Hounds Country Inn, it feels as though you’ve been transported across continents. Every corner brims with character, offering a visual feast of British nostalgia and charm.
Originally constructed in the 1700s in the UK, the building operated as the Sussex Arms until its closure in 1987. At that time, the pub was carefully dismantled, with much of its interior sent to Australia in five shipping containers. This meticulous effort ensured that the structure’s authentic character—complete with exposed beams and quaint, vintage decor—was preserved.
In 2007, the Sussex Arms was reassembled and reborn as The Fox & Hounds in Mount Tamborine, bringing a slice of old England to the Queensland hinterland. The transformation was more than architectural; it was a revival of spirit and tradition.
Today, the pub gardens feature quintessential British icons, including a classic red telephone box and a miniature double-decker bus. Inside, the walls are adorned with an eclectic mix of treasures—medieval trinkets, vintage football scarves, and cricket bats—all adding layers of storytelling and nostalgia.
During the colder months, an open fireplace casts a welcoming glow, making the Fox & Hounds a cozy retreat, especially during the cooler months. It’s a destination that feels like home while offering a truly unique experience in the heart of Mount Tamborine.
Menu
The menu at Fox & Hounds Country Inn is a heartfelt tribute to classic British cuisine, offering a delicious selection of hearty, traditional dishes that transport your taste buds straight to the UK.
Starters
We started our British feast with Weish Rarebit and breaded mushrooms. What is Weish Rarebit you ask – well good question because I was wondering the same thing?
Welsh rarebit (sometimes called Welsh rabbit, though it contains no rabbit) is a traditional British dish that consists of a savory cheese sauce served over toasted bread. And it is devine!
Mains
In terms of mains, you can expect a variety of classic British pub dishes, including Fish and Chips with golden battered fish, chunky fries, and mushy peas; Bangers and Mash with savory sausages, creamy mashed potatoes, and onion gravy; or Toad in the Hole with sausages baked in Yorkshire pudding batter with onion gravy.
The kitchen’s attention to detail shines in every bite, with staples like the Beef and Guinness Pie stealing the spotlight. At the staff’s recommendation, this is what I ordered and I can see why its a crowd favourite! The pie was encased in a perfectly flaky golden crust and packed with a rich, flavorful filling.
Being a Sunday though, our group couldn’t go past ordering a few Sunday Roasts. These are a true highlight including a feast of tender roast meats, golden potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and homemade Yorkshire puddings puffed to perfection.
For vegetarians, options like the nut roast, vegan curry or vegan lasagna ensure everyone can enjoy a taste of British comfort food.
A word of warning – ensure you come to Fox & Hounds with a good appetite – the serving sizes are more then generous, but you’re going to want to save room for dessert too!
Dessert
We shared a Knickerbocker Glory, a classic British ice cream dessert, which was served in a tall glass showcasing the layers of ice cream berries and cream.
Other dessert options on the menu include Spotted Dick, a steamed pudding with custard and ice cream, Sticky Toffee Pudding with vanilla ice cream and warm butterscotch sauce or a classic Eton Mess with meringue, raspberries, and cream.
Pricing
Pricing is great too – particuarly given the generous serving sizes. Expect to pay around $15 for a starter, $30 for a main and $15 for a dessert.
Drinks
To complement the menu, the bar offers an impressive selection of British ales on tap, including favourites like Guinness, Kilkenny, Old Speckled Hen, and London Pride, as well as a curated wine and cocktail list.
Special Events and Features
Fox & Hounds hosts a variety of events that add to its charm. Murder Mystery Nights, with themes ranging from Grand Gatsby to Sherlock Holmes, offer an evening filled with laughter and intrigue.
Murder Mystery Nights are $85 per person and include a 3 course dinner and host. A minimum of 12 people are required.
The pub also celebrates British days of recognition, such as Guy Fawkes Night and St. George’s Day, providing a cultural experience for patrons.
Stay for a while
For those looking to extend their visit to Fox & Hounds Country Inn, the venue offers charming and comfortable accommodation that perfectly complements its British-inspired experience.
Nestled above the main inn, the self-contained suite provides a cozy retreat that combines old-world charm with modern conveniences.
The thoughtfully designed suite features a king-sized bed, an ensuite bathroom, and a fully equipped kitchenette, making it an ideal choice for couples or solo travellers.
The space is adorned with rustic touches that echo the pub’s English countryside theme, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Large windows provide views of the surrounding greenery, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Staying at Fox & Hounds also has the added convenience of having the pub’s fantastic food and drink offerings just a few steps away. Imagine starting your day with a peaceful morning coffee on the suite’s private balcony or ending the evening with a hearty meal downstairs, followed by a pint by the fireplace.
