Hervey Bay Whale Watching Tours

Hervey Bay whale watching

One of the standout activities in Hervey Bay is definitely whale watching. The whale watching season runs from July to November. During this time, humpback whales travel over 5,000 km from the north to the Antarctic.

What sets Hervey Bay apart from other spots on Australia’s east coast is that the whales don’t just pass by; they actually take a break here, enjoying the warm, calm waters. This unique behaviour has earned Hervey Bay the title of Australia’s whale watching capital.

There are various whale-watching tours available, each offering a unique experience. The most sought-after tour is the half-day option, available both in the morning and afternoon. It’s perfect if you’re pressed for time but eager to experience more of what the region offers.

Arkarra Lagoons and Wetlands Reserve

Arkarra Lagoons and Wetlands Reserve Hervey Bay

Just north of Hervey Bay, the Arkarra Lagoons and Wetlands Reserve is an ideal spot for a leisurely walk or a meal, with the Arkarra Tea Gardens on site.

Arkarra, meaning “place of many ducks” in the Aboriginal language, is a sanctuary for wildlife, including ducks, birds, reptiles, wallabies, turtles, echidnas, and fish. During my visit, I was delighted to see a remarkable number of turtles, some just hatchlings.

The reserve features two walking trails: the Wetlands Circuit at 600m and the Lagoons Circuit at 840m. If you’re visiting, bring insect repellent to fend off mosquitos.

I’d recommend planning your visit around breakfast or lunch to enjoy the serene setting of the Arkarra Tea Gardens. It’s a beautiful place to relax and unwind.

Location: 415A Esplanade, Hervey Bay

Opening Hours: Daily from 6 am to 3 pm Monday to Thursday and until 7 pm Friday to Sunday

Hervey Bay is a fantastic destination to visit at any time of the year, thanks to its warm subtropical climate, offering perfect weather for most activities year-round.

While many visitors flock here during the whale watching season from July to October, it’s worth noting that July and August are winter months. The water might be chilly for swimming then, though visitors from colder climates may find it pleasantly warm with air temperatures ranging from 12 to 22 degrees Celsius.

The summer months, from December to February, are particularly hot and humid, which might be challenging for those not accustomed to intense heat. Additionally, the wet season spans from January to March, characterized by hot, humid weather with occasional short bursts of rain typically early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

If you prefer a quieter visit, consider timing your trip outside of the Queensland school holidays, as the area becomes significantly busier during these periods.

Hopefully, this guide has given you lots of inspiration for the best things to do in Hervey Bay.
